New HPE Curriculum Links for School Camps in Victoria
Planning your next school camp in Victoria just got even easier.
This page maps the Abseiling activity to the Australian Curriculum: Health and Physical Education (HPE). Teachers can print or save it as a PDF for lesson planning.
Activity: Abseiling (artificial tower or natural rock face) delivered by qualified Scout Adventures instructors.
Mapped for Years 5–6 and Years 7–8. Suitable for school outdoor education and adventure programs.
| Curriculum content description (HPE) | How the activity links | Sample session feature |
|---|---|---|
| Practise and apply specialised movement skills in a variety of situations (v9: AC9HP6M04) | Students practise controlled descent and foot placement, developing specialised abseiling techniques. | Short wall descents progressing to full height; instructor demonstration and practice repetition. |
| Investigate and apply movement concepts related to effort, space, time, objects and people (v9: AC9HP6M03) | Students manage body position, rope tension and descent speed to ensure balance and safety. | Speed variation drills; analysis of body alignment and friction management. |
| Demonstrate ethical behaviour and fair play that aligns with rules (v8.4: ACPMP069) | Students act responsibly, respecting rules, instructors and peers, ensuring trust in shared safety systems. | Group discussion on trust and teamwork; buddy check system demonstration. |
| Apply critical and creative thinking to generate and assess solutions to movement challenges (v8.4: ACPMP068) | Students assess techniques for comfort and safety, adapting their approach to suit different heights or conditions. | Problem-solving challenges; scenario-based adjustments (wind, gloves, rope angle). |

|---|---|---|
| Analyse and refine movement skills in a variety of movement situations (v9: AC9HP8M01) | Students analyse body position, rope handling and braking technique, refining their control with each descent. | Peer observation feedback; video playback or instructor demonstration for analysis. |
| Demonstrate and explain how movement concepts (effort, space, time, objects, people) can be manipulated to improve outcomes (v9: AC9HP8M03) | Students control effort and time variables (speed, braking pressure) and understand how rope angle and friction influence motion. | Practice adjusting speed; debrief discussion on energy use and control. |
| Plan and implement strategies for connecting to natural and built environments to promote health and wellbeing (v9) | Students explore how abseiling encourages resilience, confidence and appreciation for outdoor physical activity. | Reflection on personal growth and overcoming fear through trust and guided risk-taking. |
| Select, use and refine strategies to support inclusion, fair play and collaboration (Achievement standard link) | Students work collaboratively to support peers, encourage inclusivity, and celebrate individual achievements. | Supportive peer spotting, inclusive rotation, and role reflection sessions. |
Before the activity: Conduct safety briefing on harnesses, helmets and abseil devices. Demonstrate technique, communication signals and braking control.
During the activity: Encourage students to manage their own safety systems under supervision, communicate clearly, and provide peer encouragement.
After the activity: Reflect on challenges faced, problem-solving, teamwork and emotional responses to height and risk.
This activity supports the Movement & Physical Activity and Personal, Social & Community Health strands for Years 5–8.
